Why is the airtight seal important?

It all has to do with how gases and water vapour behave in enclosed spaces, and is governed by a few Laws of Physics, such as Boyle’s, Charles’, Dalton’s & Henry’s. In essence, once water enters a space (because it is not sealed properly) instead of the water evaporating out again later, it becomes water vapour and remains in the space for a much longer time.

In a climate such as the UK’s, this means the screw-head is continually in water & oxygen environment, never getting to dry out properly. This can cause the fastener to corrode (rust) up to 20 times faster than if a cap had NOT been used!

This effect can be easily confirmed, by examining vehicles that use hinge-caps over the number-plate fixings. Even on cars less than 6 months old, zinc-coated screws will show signs of advanced corrosion.

Similar issues arise with ‘polytop’ style plastic-coated screws. Often the plastic coating will crack as the screw is being tightened into place. Water can enter these cracks and cause accelerated corrosion, resulting in visible rust streaks.

 

Uses & Applications

Because they are UV-stabilised and completely seal the head of the fixing, Snap-Caps are ideal for exterior as well as interior applications. Even in extreme environments, Snap-Caps can be expected to last for 10-15 years, all the while protecting the screwhead against corrosion.

• Caravans, mobile homes & transportable homes
• Boats (from small runabouts to Navy frigates, high-speed ferries and ocean liners)
• Signs
• Vehicle number plates – specific colours are available to match UK front and rear plates
• Cabinetry (concealing all types of fixings, incl. the screws used with door handles and knobs)
• Furniture upholstery
• White goods
• Electrical and signalling control boxes and panels (Snap-Caps are an excellent way to insulate fasteners)
• Other vehicle applications – buses, trains etc, Horse floats and other trailers
• Aircraft – private and corporate aircraft up to BA 777’s and Airbuses
• Aftermarket decoration of motorcycles, SUV’s, lorries and HGV cabs

Working in Winter - Using Snap-Caps in Cold Weather

Snap-Caps are designed and moulded to very fine tolerances.  The Cap & Washer interock together with a perfect air and watertight seal, protecting the head of the fixing against rusting for many years.  This also results in a very secure Cap that resists tampering.

Both cap and washer rely on the plastic distorting as the cap locks over the washer.  As the plastic become colder, it stiffens and does not flex as much.  For the type of plastic used for Snap-Caps, these changes to the behaviour of the plastic are most noticable when the plastic is below 15°C.

Fitting the Cap to the Washer may require more force.  It may also result in a white 'stress' ring forming around the perimeter of the cap. The white ring may disappear over time, especially if the caps are warmed up.

The Fix: Before using, simply warm the caps in an 'inside' pocket (ie close to your body), or in an oven or similar warming device to a maximum of 100°C. Once fitted, Snap-Caps can endure temperatures from -35°C to 120°C without problems. Because Snap-Caps are UV-stabilised, they can be used both indoors and outdoors.

 

Difficulty "snapping" the Cap onto the Washer

If you experience difficulty in locking the Cap over the Washer, and/or a White 'stress' ring (or halo) forms around the perimeter of the cap, there are a number of likely causes:

• The Caps are too cold, and the plastic will not flex

The Fix: See "Using Plastic Caps in Cold Weather" (above).

• The fixings you are using are too large for the Washer.  This prevents the Washer from flexing as the Cap is being pushed on.

The Fix:

• Ensure you are using the correct-sized Snap-Cap for the fixing.  Some imported fixings may not conform to British or EU standards, and the heads of the fixings may be up to 40% oversized
• Ensure you are using the correct Washer type for the head of the fixing - you MUST use a CSK Washer with Countersunk-head fixings, and F/B Washer for all "flat-bottomed" fixings such as pan-heads, flange-heads etc.
• Try the Snap-Cap with a smaller fixing.

• You are not using the correct technique to fit the Cap to the Washer.  Because Snap-Caps are designed and moulded to very fine tolerances, the caps cannot be pushed on "flat".  Do NOT hit Caps with a hammer (or similar) - it will cause the Caps to split
